What’s Your Truth?
Have you ever heard someone argue against something saying, “That’s not my truth?” This statement makes me wonder where their truth originates.
The Bible says the best source of truth is God. “Every word of God is flawless…” (Proverbs 30: 5) and “The word of the Lord is right and true…” (Psalm 33: 4). Jesus confirmed these Old Testament passages by declaring that God’s word is truth. (John 17: 17).
“God is not a man that he should lie… ” (Numbers 23: 19). This implies that we humans lie on occasion. Even when we make a good faith attempt to understand and speak the truth, we can be mistaken. What to do about these human deficiencies? Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Read: your truth). Rather we are to lean on Scripture, which is “God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…“ (2 Timothy 3: 16).
We have access to God’s word in Scripture, but how can we be certain that we accurately understand it? In John 14: 26, Jesus advocated going to the Holy Spirit, the counselor, who will teach us all things including God’s truth.
How do we convince someone erroneously relying on their truth to adopt God’s truth instead? Pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance. Then speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4: 15). This is consistent with the godly attribute of love and avoids offending people.
