Our Bodies and Heaven
What happens to our bodies after they return to dust? Do they go to a place called heaven? If so, what is this heaven?
Regarding the future of our post death bodies, consider these Old Testament passages:
Isaiah 26: 19 God’s “…dead will live; their bodies will rise.”
Job said, “…after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.” (Job 19:26)
So, if our bodies can rise and our flesh can see God, where will this occur? I assume heaven—God would probably have us come to His place rather than our fallen earth. But the meeting might take place in the new heaven and earth mentioned in Revelation Chapter 21. Either way, calling it heaven suffices.
But what is heaven? Biblical descriptions are general and indirect. Isaiah said it’s a place of no more tears, a place of complete harmony even between predator and prey (Isaiah 65). Paul proclaimed heaven as a place where our bodies will be glorified like Jesus (Philippians 3: 21) and that it contains inexpressible sounds (2 Corinthians 12: 4). Even Jesus referred to it generally as a place of many rooms He has prepared for us. (John 14: 1).
Why the inadequate description? Heaven might be too fantastic for us humans to understand and our words to fully describe. Perhaps the best we can know for now is only what heaven is like and have faith that it is so much more.
