Not Religious but Spiritual

Have you heard people say they are not religious but spiritual?

As a person who attempts to be religious, I wonder if I could be considered spiritual too. If I seek the Holy Spirit of God, doesn’t that make me spiritual?

Yes, but my spiritual quest uses different methods. I prefer using communal worship and creeds—creeds established over millennia. My understanding is that spiritual people prefer individual worship and beliefs they’ve formulated relying on their transcendental thought.

Using this description of spiritual people, I would not be a competent member of their group. This is because my transcendental thoughts are not completely trustworthy. I occasionally deceive myself and need help to avoid doing so. Two of my helpful influences are good mentors and the Bible.

My good mentors are the people with whom I worship communally. They also include a small group of Christian men, with whom I have meet weekly for 25 years. All have given me sound spiritual advice at critical times, especially times of self-deception. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”

I’ve also benefited by studying the Bible through a great organization called Bible Study Fellowship. My BSF studies have shown me the Bible’s wise guidance on every subject. This guidance is confirmed in 2 Timothy 3:16. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…”.

I need these religious influences to teach my spirit accurately and keep it accountable.
